When temperatures in Indiana start to soar, you need to be able to depend on your air conditioner to cool your home quickly. However, not many homeowners actually understand how their air conditioner works and, therefore, fall victim to believing certain myths. Not only are these myths stopping your air conditioner from keeping your house cool, they may also be costing you money! So, today at Quality Plumbing & Heating, Inc., we’re busting the top three myths we see homeowners believe about their air conditioners.
Myth #1: Turning your thermostat down all the way will cool your house faster
We understand the desire to cool down your house quickly. Especially if the temperature outside rises unexpectedly and your house suddenly feels like the tropics. However, even if you set your thermostat at the lowest possible setting, your AC unit will continue to run at the same pace. It’s a much better idea to set the thermostat at a temperature that is closer to the outside temperature, to keep your house cool and save you money.
Myth #2: A bigger AC unit will give you better results
This is another common myth that homeowners believe when they are unsatisfied with their AC performance. However, bigger is not better when it comes to AC units. If you purchase an AC with a capacity that is too big for your home, the compressor will turn itself on and off too quickly and wear out. Not only does this shorten the lifespan of the unit, but it also wastes a lot of electricity. This is why it is important to always consult a professional regarding the proper size unit for your space.
Myth #3: Turning your AC off while you’re away from home will save energy
If you work outside the home and are away all day, it makes sense to turn everything off before you leave for the day. After all, you don’t leave all your lights on, right? However, when you turn your AC off, you allow the temperature inside the home to rise all day long and the AC will have to work even harder to cool it back down at the end of the day. If you’d like to save energy while you’re away, turn the thermostat up a few degrees before you leave so the unit still runs, just not as often.
